When Consulting An Obstetrician Los Angeles Women Opt For The Best Possible Care

By Gary Kelly

Despite the fact that millions of babies are born every year, pregnancy still remain a miraculous time. It is amazing that an expectant woman is actually nurturing a brand new life inside her body. But this is also the time when great care should be taken with the health of both the mother and the unborn baby. Both can have an impact on the health of the other. By opting for the services of an obstetrician Los Angeles women make sure that they are looked after by a highly qualified specialist.

It is a common misconception that obstetricians and gynecologists are the same. There are many overlapping areas between the two professions but they focus on different things. Gynecologists are concerned with the overall health of the female reproductive organs, regardless of whether the patient is pregnant or not. Obstetricians, on the other hand, concern themselves solely with the care of pregnant women and their unborn babies.

Not every pregnant woman can afford the services of obstetricians. They are, in fact, very expensive. These women make do with the services of their general practitioner and during the birth they are often assisted by a midwife. Thankfully, most pregnancies are concluded without any problems or difficulties. Unfortunately, general practitioners and midwifes are not able to cope with severe complications and the lives of the mother and baby may be in the balance.

Obstetricians are highly qualified specialists. With the aid of modern technology and new diagnostic tools and procedures they are now able to identify many potential problems in the very early stages of the pregnancy. Many of these problems can be treated long before the baby is born and it is not uncommon to even perform surgery on fetuses. This is why obstetricians perform many tests on both mother and baby throughout the pregnancy.

Many pregnant women that cannot afford the services of a specialist throughout their pregnancies nevertheless see obstetricians late in their pregnancies and ask them to tend to the actual birth. Unfortunately, this will only allow the obstetrician to deal with the consequences of complications and problems rather than treating them long before they became big issues. Many obstetricians are reluctant to take on patients late during their pregnancies.

Obstetricians do not remain involved with their patients for long after the birth unless there were problems and complications. After making sure that the mother and baby are both healthy, care of them is handed over to other doctors and specialists. There are not many obstetricians and they simply do not have the time to look after patients that are not pregnant or trying to become pregnant.

Many obstetricians are also qualified as gynecologists. Their patients prefer seeing just one specialist all the time, whether they are pregnant or not. Women struggling to become pregnant also prefer seeing a dually qualified specialist that can initially help them to fall pregnant and then manage the pregnancy for the duration. Duplication of effort is thus avoided and the specialist has access to the full medical history of the patient.

There can be no doubt that obstetricians have played a very important role in saving the lives of many unborn babies and their mothers. They have also, due to their ability to diagnose problems at an early stage, allowed many babies to lead normal lives. The earlier a problem is treated, the greater the chances of success.
