The Importance Of Ocean Conservation And The Conservancy

By Nancy Russell

While there are several organizations working to preserve the ocean and its vibrant sea life and natural resources, some are better than others. In all cases, it is often donations from a number of different supporters which help with regards to Ocean Conservation. For example, most of these organizations are ran solely on donations from corporate and private entities. Therefore, it is often good to know the facts, goals, priorities and purpose of each before donating money or time to assist in these efforts.

The most notable of these organizations are the Ocean Conservancy and the Marine Council. Each agency has a specific set of goals and priorities as related to conserving marine life and the overall oceanic environment. As such, there are a now a number of colleges and universities which provide coursework and degree programs in marine biology as well as underwater environmental concerns.

When it comes to the Ocean Conservancy, these goals include keeping an active and thriving oceanic environment for the people and wildlife which depend on its valuable natural resources. Whereas, the Marine Conservation Council and other similar organizations work to promote the health and well being of oceanic life in all its forms.

Both the Ocean Conservancy and the Marine Council have been around for quite some time. As such, both are often well respected by agency, corporate, government and private donors. For, while both have different yet similar goals, the ultimate priority is to save valuable natural resources which are necessary in sustaining a multitude of life forms.

Neither of these non-profits could have achieved these goals or will be able to continue without the assistance of donations from corporations and individuals around the world. Donations which have already assisted in making valuable progress when it comes to combating climate change, eliminating acidification in the ocean and restoring the Gulf of Mexico with the best available science and technology to date.

The Marine Council has helped to spearhead efforts in replenishing what was at once endangered species such as the sea turtle. In addition, the agency is responsible for designating and strengthening marine sanctuaries so that these efforts can continue over time. Many volunteers associated with the council are also part of other non-profits which work to clean up coastal waterways as well as international coastlines.

With regards to both of these non-profits and others, it is often the volunteers and staff who do the hardest work. For, going out into the field, surveying and tracking while cleaning and moving endangered species is often a difficult and timely process. However, as the ocean also supplies water, food and air to a number of different communities, this work is also essential in saving humankind.

Having already removed over 144,000 pounds of trash and created jobs in the millions, it is easy to see how these organizations have made a difference. In addition, as over two billion people rely on the sea life as a source of protein, these organizations are saving humans as well as the oceanic environment and the life breeding and living within its waters. As such, it remains important to support these and other non-profits now and the future.
